Edouard pignon

France, b. 1905–1993

Édouard Pignon (1905–1993) was a prominent French painter known for his expressive style and engagement with social and political themes. Born in Bully-les-Mines, France, Pignon emerged as a significant figure in the Parisian art scene during the mid-20th century. His work is characterized by a robust use of color and dynamic compositions, often reflecting the struggles and resilience of the working class. Pignon worked primarily in oil on canvas, but his oeuvre also includes works on paper and lithographs. He was associated with the School of Paris and maintained close ties with other influential artists and intellectuals of his time.

Pignon’s art has been exhibited in major institutions, including the Musée National d’Art Moderne in Paris and the Centre Pompidou, which have both held retrospectives of his work. His paintings have also featured in significant group exhibitions highlighting 20th-century French art. At auction, Pignon’s works have appeared at leading houses such as Christie’s and Sotheby’s, where his paintings have achieved notable results, reflecting sustained collector interest. His legacy endures as a testament to his commitment to both artistic innovation and social commentary, securing his place among the key figures of modern French painting.
