Bahman Jalali

Iran, b. 1944–2010

Bahman Jalali (1944–2010) was a pioneering Iranian photographer renowned for his profound documentation of Iran’s social and political landscape. Born in Tehran, Jalali began his career in the late 1960s and gained international recognition for his compelling photojournalism during the Iranian Revolution of 1979 and the Iran-Iraq War. His work, primarily in black-and-white photography, is characterized by a sensitive yet unflinching portrayal of everyday life and historical events, blending documentary precision with poetic composition. Jalali’s later series, such as “Image of Imagination,” explored the intersection of photography and historical memory, often incorporating archival materials and experimental techniques.

Jalali’s photographs have been exhibited in major institutions, including the British Museum in London and the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris. He played a significant role in shaping contemporary Iranian photography, both as an artist and educator, teaching at several universities and co-founding the influential Akskhaneh Shahr (The City Photo Museum) in Tehran. His works have appeared in notable auctions at Christie’s, reflecting his status in the international art market. Jalali’s legacy endures through his impactful visual narratives and his mentorship of a new generation of Iranian photographers.
