Iraq, b. 1973

Azzam Al Bazzaz, born in Baghdad in 1946, is a distinguished Iraqi artist and academic renowned for his contributions to contemporary art and design. A graduate of the Academy of Fine Arts in Baghdad, he dedicated over three decades to teaching art and design at his alma mater, where he also served as the Head of the Design Department from 1985 to 1989 and again from 1993 to 2003. His artistic oeuvre encompasses painting, sculpture, and large-scale public installations, with numerous monuments and murals adorning Baghdad and other Iraqi cities.

Al Bazzaz's work is characterized by a deep engagement with Iraqi heritage, often incorporating symbolic motifs that reflect themes of peace, resilience, and hope. His 2014 exhibition, "Iraq... It is Iraq," held at the Jordanian Plastic Artists Association in Amman, showcased 23 pieces that delved into the spiritual and historical depths of Iraq, resonating with both local and international audiences. In recognition of his artistic excellence, he was honored with the Creativity Award by Iraq's Ministry of Culture and Information in 2000 and received the Arab Innovators and Pioneers Award from the League of Arab States in 2009.

Beyond his artistic practice, Al Bazzaz has made significant scholarly contributions, authoring ten books on art and design and publishing numerous research papers. He has also supervised multiple master's and doctoral theses, influencing a new generation of artists and designers. Currently residing in Amman, Jordan, he continues to create and exhibit his work, maintaining an active presence in the art community.
