Aziz Al Rasam

Iraq

Aziz Al Rasam was an influential Iraqi artist recognized for his contributions to the development of modern art in Iraq. Born in Baghdad in 1887 and passing away in 1952, Al Rasam is often credited as one of the pioneers of Iraqi painting, particularly known for his role in introducing Western artistic techniques to the region. His work primarily encompassed painting, with a focus on portraiture and scenes reflecting Iraqi society and landscapes. Al Rasam’s style merged academic realism with local themes, helping to lay the foundation for subsequent generations of Iraqi artists.

Throughout his career, Aziz Al Rasam participated in several important exhibitions, both within Iraq and internationally, that showcased the emerging modern art movement in the country. His works have been held in esteemed collections, including the Iraqi Museum of Modern Art in Baghdad, underscoring his significance in the nation’s cultural history. While records of his presence at major international auction houses such as Christie’s, Sotheby’s, or Bonhams are limited, his legacy endures through institutional recognition and his influence on Iraqi art education and practice. Al Rasam remains a seminal figure in the narrative of twentieth-century Middle Eastern art.
