Assem Farman

Iraq

Asem Farman (1956–2023) was an Iraqi artist renowned for his expressive and symbolic works that delved into the human condition and societal challenges. Born in Al-Diwaniyah, Iraq, he graduated from the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad in 1978, specializing in graphic arts. He furthered his education at the College of Fine Arts, University of Baghdad, earning a master's degree in painting in 1989 and a doctorate in the history of fine arts in 1999.

Throughout his career, Farman held several academic positions, including assistant professor at the University of Baghdad and professor at the University of Hodeidah in Yemen, where he also served as dean of the Faculty of Fine Arts. He later taught at Al-Ahliyya Amman University in Jordan and contributed to the establishment of the Faculty of Applied Arts at Uruk University in Baghdad. His artistic journey was marked by numerous solo and group exhibitions across Iraq and the Arab world. Notably, he received the Graphic Art Award at the Third Baghdad Biennale in 2002 and was honored at the Arab Artists Forum in Cairo in 2012.

Farman's art often reflected the pain and struggles of the Iraqi people, employing expressive symbolism to convey themes of memory, identity, and human suffering. His series "Shards of Memory" exemplifies this approach, capturing the collective and personal traumas experienced by his compatriots. His works remain a testament to his deep engagement with the socio-political landscape of Iraq and the broader Arab region.
