Aristide Maillol

France, b. 1861–1944

Aristide Maillol (1861–1944) was a renowned French sculptor, painter, and printmaker, celebrated for his pivotal role in the evolution of modern sculpture. Born in Banyuls-sur-Mer, France, Maillol initially trained as a painter at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris before turning to sculpture in the late 1890s. His mature style is characterized by serene, harmonious forms and a focus on the female nude, emphasizing volume and simplicity over intricate detail. Maillol’s sculptures, often cast in bronze or carved in stone, are noted for their classical balance and sensuality, positioning him as a key figure bridging 19th-century academic traditions and 20th-century modernism.

Maillol’s works have been widely exhibited in major institutions, including the Musée d'Orsay and the Musée Maillol in Paris, which is dedicated to his oeuvre. His sculptures have also been featured in international exhibitions, such as at the Museum of Modern Art in New York. At auction, Maillol’s pieces have achieved significant results at leading houses like Christie’s and Sotheby’s, with works such as "La Méditerranée" and "La Rivière" commanding strong prices and underscoring his enduring market appeal. Today, Maillol is recognized as a master of modern sculpture, with his works held in prominent museum collections worldwide.
