Anwar Sonia

Oman, b. 1948

Anwar Sonia (أنور سونيا), born in 1948 in Oman, is widely recognized as a pioneering figure in Omani modern art. Often referred to as the "Father of Omani Modern Art," Sonia’s career spans several decades, during which he has played a crucial role in shaping the contemporary art scene in Oman. Working primarily in painting, his oeuvre encompasses a variety of mediums, including oil, acrylic, and watercolor, and is characterized by a vibrant palette and expressive brushwork. His style often merges elements of Omani heritage with modernist influences, reflecting both local traditions and broader artistic movements.

Sonia’s work has been exhibited extensively in Oman and internationally. Notably, his paintings have been featured in major institutional exhibitions such as those at the National Museum of Oman and the Sultan Qaboos Cultural Center. He has also participated in group shows representing Omani art abroad, including exhibitions in Europe and the Middle East. While his works are highly regarded within institutional and private collections, there is no public record of his paintings appearing at major international auction houses such as Christie’s, Sotheby’s, or Bonhams as of the latest available data.

Throughout his career, Anwar Sonia has contributed significantly to the development of the visual arts in Oman, both as an artist and as a mentor to younger generations. His legacy is marked by his dedication to fostering artistic expression and cultural dialogue within the Sultanate, making him a central figure in the narrative of Omani art.
