Alwan Al-Alwan

Iraq, b. 1962

Born on December 27, 1962, in Baghdad, Iraq, Alwan Al-Alwan is a distinguished sculptor whose work delves into themes of love, belonging, and human connection. He earned his Bachelor's degree in Fine Arts from the University of Baghdad's College of Fine Arts in 1999. Al-Alwan's sculptures are characterized by minimalist and robust figures that capture moments of intimacy and solitude, conveying profound emotional narratives. Notable works such as "Saint" (2009) and "Scrawny" (2016) exemplify his ability to infuse simplicity with deep emotional resonance.

Throughout his career, Al-Alwan has participated in numerous exhibitions both locally and internationally. His first solo exhibition, "The Creation," was held at Madarat Gallery in Baghdad in 2007. Subsequent notable exhibitions include "The Fire Rider" at Ortega Gallery in London (2008), "The Mesopotamia" at Qibab Gallery in Abu Dhabi (2008), and "Small Me" at Dar Al-Anda Art Gallery in Amman (2015). In 2000, he was awarded the Ismail Fattah Prize at the Contemporary Sculpture Exhibition in Baghdad. Al-Alwan continues to reside and work in Baghdad, dedicating himself full-time to his art.
