About the work

Bold black lines and jagged geometric forms collide across a stark white ground, suggesting fragmented architectural ruins or a landscape in collapse. The vigorous hatching and high-contrast composition give the etching a raw, expressive energy.

Alfred Chircop

Malta, b. 1933–2015

Alfred Chircop (1933–2015) was a prominent Maltese artist recognized for his significant contributions to modern and contemporary art in Malta. Working primarily in painting, Chircop explored a range of styles throughout his career, including abstraction and expressionism, and was known for his bold use of color and dynamic compositions. His oeuvre encompasses oils, acrylics, and works on paper, reflecting both Maltese landscapes and more conceptual, non-representational themes.

Chircop’s work has been exhibited in major institutional settings, including the National Museum of Fine Arts in Valletta (now MUŻA), which holds several of his pieces in its permanent collection. He participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions in Malta and abroad, helping to shape the post-war Maltese art scene. His influence extended to teaching and mentoring younger generations of artists, further cementing his legacy within the country’s cultural heritage.

At auction, Alfred Chircop’s paintings have appeared at reputable houses such as Sotheby’s, where his works have attracted interest from collectors of modern Mediterranean art. His market presence underscores his standing as one of Malta’s most respected 20th-century artists, with his paintings continuing to be sought after both locally and internationally.
