Peru

Alberto Quintanilla (b. 1934, Cusco, Peru – d. 2021, Lima, Peru) was a prominent Peruvian painter, printmaker, and sculptor, celebrated for his fantastical imagery and surrealist approach. Quintanilla’s work is characterized by dreamlike compositions, often populated by whimsical creatures and mythological figures, reflecting both Andean folklore and universal themes. His mastery of various mediums, including oil painting, engraving, and sculpture, allowed him to develop a distinctive visual language that resonated within and beyond Latin America.

Quintanilla’s art has been exhibited in major institutions, including the Musée d’Art Moderne de la Ville de Paris and the Museo de Arte de Lima, affirming his international stature. He participated in significant group and solo exhibitions throughout Europe and the Americas, notably representing Peru at the Venice Biennale in 1972. His works are held in public and private collections worldwide, and he is recognized as a key figure in 20th-century Peruvian art.

At auction, Alberto Quintanilla’s pieces have appeared at reputable houses such as Sotheby’s and Christie’s, where his paintings and engravings have attracted collectors interested in Latin American modernism. His legacy endures through his imaginative oeuvre, which continues to inspire new generations of artists and art enthusiasts.
