Ahmed Maher Raef

Egypt, b. 1926–1999

Ahmed Maher Raef (1926–1999) was an Egyptian artist whose work contributed to the development of modern art in Egypt during the mid-20th century. Born and raised in Egypt, Raef was known for his engagement with painting, often exploring themes rooted in Egyptian heritage and daily life. His artistic style reflected a synthesis of traditional motifs and modernist approaches, positioning him among the notable figures of his generation who sought to bridge local identity with contemporary artistic movements.

Raef’s works have been exhibited in several prominent Egyptian institutions, including the Museum of Modern Egyptian Art in Cairo, which houses examples of his paintings. His participation in national exhibitions and group shows throughout the 1950s and 1960s further established his reputation within the Egyptian art scene. While his works are primarily held in institutional and private collections within Egypt, select pieces have occasionally appeared at major auction houses such as Sotheby’s and Christie’s, underscoring his recognition beyond local circles. Ahmed Maher Raef’s legacy endures through his contributions to the evolution of Egyptian modern art, reflecting both the cultural richness and the artistic innovation of his era.
