About the work

Five elongated, abstracted figures are arranged against a vivid turquoise ground, their simplified faces and gestures conveying a quiet sense of human gathering and introspection. The warm reds, yellows, and earthy browns of the figures contrast boldly with the cool background, lending the composition a deeply expressive, folk-art quality.

Ahmad Nawash

Jordan, b. 1934–2017

Ahmad Nawash (أحمد النواش, also transliterated as Ahmad Al-Nawash) was a pioneering Jordanian artist born in 1934 and active until his passing in 2017. Recognized as one of the foundational figures of modern art in Jordan, Nawash’s practice encompassed painting, drawing, and printmaking. His work is noted for its expressive use of color and form, often reflecting themes rooted in Jordanian heritage and broader Arab identity, while also engaging with modernist and abstract tendencies.

Nawash’s art has been exhibited in significant institutional settings, including the Jordan National Gallery of Fine Arts, which holds several of his works in its permanent collection. He participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions both within Jordan and internationally, contributing to the visibility of Jordanian contemporary art on the global stage. His contributions have been acknowledged by art historians and critics as instrumental in shaping the trajectory of visual arts in Jordan.

At auction, Ahmad Nawash’s works have appeared at major houses such as Christie’s, notably in sales focusing on Modern and Contemporary Arab, Iranian, and Turkish Art. His paintings have attracted collectors’ interest, achieving notable results that underscore his importance in the regional art market. Nawash’s enduring legacy is marked by his role as both an artist and educator, influencing generations of Jordanian artists through his creative output and mentorship.
