Ahmad Fouad Selim

Egypt, b. 1936–2009

Ahmad Fouad Selim (أحمد فؤاد سليم), born in Egypt in 1936 and passing in 2009, was a prominent Egyptian painter and educator whose work significantly contributed to the development of modern art in Egypt. Selim was known for his innovative approach to painting, often blending elements of abstraction with figurative motifs, and his exploration of Egyptian identity through color, form, and symbolism. His oeuvre spans a variety of mediums, including oil on canvas and mixed media, reflecting both a deep engagement with local heritage and an openness to international modernist trends.

Selim’s artistic career was marked by numerous institutional exhibitions, both within Egypt and internationally. He participated in key group shows at the Cairo Atelier and the Egyptian Modern Art Museum, and his works have been included in major retrospectives highlighting the evolution of Egyptian modernism. As an influential professor at the Faculty of Fine Arts in Cairo, Selim mentored generations of artists, further cementing his legacy in the Egyptian art scene.

His paintings have appeared at reputable auction houses, including Sotheby’s and Christie’s, where they have attracted the attention of collectors interested in Middle Eastern modernism. Selim’s works are held in several public and private collections, underscoring his enduring impact on the art historical landscape of Egypt and the broader Arab world.
