Adeeb Makki

Iraq, b. 1951

Adeeb Makki, born in Baghdad in 1951, is an Iraqi artist known for his versatility across various artistic mediums and styles. He was instrumental in founding Iraq's first children's magazine and produced the country's inaugural animated film. Makki's work spans multiple artistic schools and materials, reflecting his experimental approach and adaptability.

In 1997, seeking greater freedom and tranquility to pursue his creative endeavors, Makki left Iraq. He initially resided in Jordan for seven years before relocating to the United States, where he continues to live. Throughout his career, Makki has held solo exhibitions in numerous international cities, including New York, London, California, Mexico, Kuwait, and Beirut. His contributions to children's literature further underscore his diverse artistic portfolio.

Makki's artistic philosophy embraces the natural diversity found in both urban and rural environments, leading him to explore realism, ornamentation, abstraction, and symbolism. He emphasizes the importance of both innate talent and formal education in an artist's development, believing that while talent is essential, academic study provides the technical skills necessary for artistic growth. Makki's work often draws inspiration from nature, the human form, and societal struggles, aiming to create art that is both genuine and resonant.
