Abdullah Alhariri

Morocco

Abdallah El Hariri, born in Casablanca in 1949, is a distinguished Moroccan painter and graphic designer renowned for his innovative approach to Arabic calligraphy. He studied at the Casablanca School of Fine Arts from 1966 to 1969 and furthered his education at the European Institute of Architecture and Design in Rome in 1973. In 1980, he pursued printmaking studies in Lodz, Poland. ([dafbeirut.org](https://dafbeirut.org/en/ABDALLAH-El-HARIRI?utm_source=openai))

El Hariri's artistic journey began with an exploration of geometric forms in Islamic art, particularly focusing on the letter "A," symbolizing the first letter of his name. Over time, his work evolved as he deconstructed traditional Arabic calligraphy, creating a unique visual language that blends classical forms with modern abstraction. His techniques include experimenting with burnt surfaces of plastic materials and linoleum, resulting in vibrant hues and complex textures reminiscent of rocky landscapes. Throughout his career spanning over three decades, El Hariri has exhibited extensively both in Morocco and internationally, including in Japan, Lebanon, the United States, China, and Belgium. Notable solo exhibitions include "Diwan 2000" at Galerie Alif Ba in Casablanca and a 1985 exhibition at Galerie Marc Pressin in Grenoble, France. In 2017, he was honored with the inaugural Mohammed VI Honorary Award for Calligraphy Art, recognizing his significant contributions to the field.
