Abdel Qader Al Rasam

Iraq, b. 1888–1952

Abdel Qader Al Rasam (1888–1952) is widely recognized as a pioneering figure in modern Iraqi art and is often credited as one of the founders of the Iraqi modern art movement. Born in Baghdad, Al Rasam was among the first Iraqi artists to receive formal training in the arts, having studied at the Military Academy in Istanbul, where he was exposed to European academic painting techniques. His work is characterized by a mastery of oil painting, with a focus on portraiture, landscapes, and scenes of daily life in Iraq, rendered in a realist style that reflects both his academic background and a deep engagement with local subject matter.

Throughout his career, Al Rasam played a significant role in shaping the artistic landscape of Iraq, both as a practicing artist and as a mentor to younger generations. His paintings have been exhibited in major Iraqi institutions, including the Iraqi Museum of Modern Art in Baghdad, which houses several of his works in its permanent collection. Al Rasam’s contributions have been celebrated in retrospective exhibitions and scholarly publications, underscoring his influence on the development of 20th-century Iraqi art.

In the international art market, Abdel Qader Al Rasam’s works have appeared at reputable auction houses such as Christie’s and Sotheby’s, where his paintings have attracted considerable interest from collectors of Middle Eastern art. These auction milestones reflect the enduring significance of his oeuvre and his status as a foundational figure in the history of Iraqi modernism.
