About the work

Egypt, b. 1938

Abd Alghafar Shaded, born in 1938 in Qalyubia, Egypt, is a distinguished visual artist and art historian whose work intricately weaves elements of Egyptian heritage with contemporary artistic expressions. After earning his Bachelor of Fine Arts from Cairo's Faculty of Fine Arts in 1962, he pursued advanced studies in Germany, obtaining a diploma from the Academy of Fine Arts in Munich in 1973. He further achieved a Master's degree in Art History and Egyptology in 1983, followed by a Doctorate in 1985 from Ludwig Maximilian University in Munich.

Shaded's artistic oeuvre spans painting and graphic arts, characterized by a unique style that reflects his deep engagement with Egyptian culture and history. His works have been showcased in numerous solo and group exhibitions both in Egypt and internationally. Notably, in 2016, the Sultan Bin Ali Al Owais Cultural Foundation in Dubai hosted a retrospective exhibition celebrating his six-decade-long career. In 2025, he was honored at the General Exhibition in Cairo, recognizing his significant contributions to the art world.

Beyond his artistic practice, Shaded has made substantial academic contributions. He served as a professor of Ancient Egyptian Art at Ludwig Maximilian University and later returned to Egypt to establish the Art History Department at Helwan University's Faculty of Fine Arts in 1995. His dedication to both creating and teaching art underscores his commitment to preserving and advancing Egypt's rich artistic legacy.
