Some exhibitions are assembled; this one was made on site. Over the past weeks, the Hindiyeh Museum at Sindyan Resort hosted a working symposium for a group of nine Egyptian painters — studio time, shared meals, long conversations, and the particular energy that comes from putting artists from one city in a room in another country. The work that came out of it is now on the museum's walls.

The exhibition opened on Thursday 30 July at 6:00 PM in the museum's galleries, and presents the full output of the workshop — new paintings made during the residency, alongside works the artists brought with them.

The artists

The symposium brought together a strong cross-section of Egypt's contemporary painting scene:

Akila Riad — عقيلة رياض
Omar Abdelzaher — عمر عبد الظاهر
Ali Said — علي سعيد
Adel Moustafa — عادل مصطفى
Eslam Elrihany — إسلام الريحاني
Mhanny Yaoud — مهني ياؤد
Mona Gharib — منى غريب
Ahmed Elbadawy — احمد البدوي
Ahmed Magdy Khattab — أحمد مجدي خطاب

Why it matters

Cross-border artist residencies are still rare in the region — rarer still when hosted by a private museum rather than a state institution. Bringing nine working Egyptian painters to Jordan to make new work, and showing that work immediately in the space where it was made, is exactly the kind of regional exchange the area's art scene needs more of. Egyptian painting has one of the deepest modern traditions in the Arab world; seeing its current generation respond to a Jordanian setting, side by side, is worth the visit on its own.
