(والتر دان)Germany
Walter Dahn (born 1954, St. Tönis, Germany) is a prominent German artist known for his contributions to the Neo-Expressionist movement, particularly as a member of the influential artist group Mülheimer Freiheit in the early 1980s. Dahn’s practice spans painting, photography, and installation, often characterized by gestural brushwork, vivid color palettes, and a raw, emotive approach that reflects the spirit of postwar German art. His work frequently explores themes of identity, memory, and cultural history, blending figurative and abstract elements.
Dahn’s art has been exhibited in major institutions, including the Museum Ludwig in Cologne and the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam. He participated in the seminal 1982 documenta 7 in Kassel, which helped cement his reputation on the international stage. His works are held in several public collections, and he has been the subject of solo exhibitions at venues such as the Kunstmuseum Bonn and the Kunsthalle Nürnberg. At auction, Dahn’s paintings and works on paper have appeared at major houses including Sotheby’s and Christie’s, with notable sales reflecting sustained collector interest in his oeuvre. Walter Dahn continues to live and work in Germany, contributing to contemporary art both as a practitioner and as a professor at the Hochschule für Bildende Künste Braunschweig.
