Sondos Fouad

Sondos Abdulhadi is an Iraqi-Canadian multidisciplinary artist known for her evocative works that explore themes of war, identity, and cultural heritage. Born to Iraqi parents, she was raised in Montreal, Canada, where she pursued a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Studio Arts and Art History, followed by a Master's degree in Media Studies. Her artistic practice spans painting, digital art, and mixed media, often incorporating elements of Arabic calligraphy and traditional motifs to reimagine narratives surrounding the Middle East.

Abdulhadi's work has been showcased in various exhibitions, reflecting her commitment to addressing socio-political issues through art. Notably, her "Warchestra" series (2007–2010) reinterprets scenes of conflict by replacing weapons with musical instruments, challenging conventional portrayals of war. This series combines visual art with sound installations, created in collaboration with poets and musicians, offering a multisensory experience that underscores the resilience of culture amidst turmoil.

In recognition of her contributions to the arts, Abdulhadi received a grant from the Conseil des arts et des lettres du Québec in 2013, honoring her innovative approach and dedication to fostering cross-cultural dialogue through her work. Her art continues to serve as a bridge between her Iraqi heritage and Canadian upbringing, offering nuanced perspectives on identity and belonging.
