Nazem Al Jaafari

Nazem Al Jaafari (ناظم الجعفري, also spelled Nazim Al Jaafari or Nazem Al-Jaafari) was a pioneering Syrian painter born in Damascus in 1918 and active until his passing in 2015. Widely regarded as one of the founders of modern Syrian art, Al Jaafari’s work is celebrated for its expressive use of color and light, often depicting scenes from daily life in Damascus, landscapes, and portraits. He primarily worked in oil on canvas, developing a distinctive style that blended impressionist influences with a deep engagement with Syrian cultural heritage.
Al Jaafari’s career spanned over seven decades, during which he held numerous solo exhibitions in Syria and abroad, including significant shows at the National Museum of Damascus and the Damascus Opera House. His works have been acquired by major public and private collections, reflecting his status as a central figure in the Syrian art scene. Internationally, his paintings have appeared at reputable auction houses such as Christie’s and Bonhams, where they have attracted collectors interested in Middle Eastern modernism.
