Spain

Ludwig Sander (1906–1975) was an American painter associated with the Abstract Expressionist movement, not Spain. Born in New York City, Sander studied at Columbia University and later in Munich, Germany, before returning to the United States. His work is characterized by geometric abstraction, often featuring bold, structured compositions with a focus on color and form. Sander was part of the New York School and exhibited alongside other prominent abstract artists of his era.

Sander’s paintings have been shown in significant institutional exhibitions, including at the Whitney Museum of American Art and the Solomon R. Guggenheim Museum in New York. His works are held in the permanent collections of major museums such as the Museum of Modern Art (MoMA) and the Whitney. At auction, Sander’s paintings have appeared at major houses including Sotheby’s and Christie’s, reflecting ongoing interest in his contributions to postwar American abstraction. Despite his American origins, his influence extended internationally through exhibitions and critical recognition.
