Levant

The cultural region spanning Syria, Lebanon, Jordan, and Palestine — historically the cradle of Mediterranean commerce, religion, and artistic exchange. The Levant produced some of the Arab world's most distinctive modernist voices, each shaped by the region's unique encounters with European, Ottoman, and indigenous traditions. From the abstract masters of Beirut — Saloua Raouda Choucair, Shafic Abboud, Etel Adnan — to the Syrian Expressionists Fateh AlMoudarres and Marwan Qasab Basha, to the Palestinian figurative tradition of Ismail Shamout and Suliman Mansour, the Levantine artistic output of the 20th century forms one of the richest seams in modern Arab art. The diaspora of Levantine artists — many living abroad while painting home — has only deepened the movement's international reach.
