Kwahdar Saad

Sadik Kwaish Alfraji, born in Baghdad, Iraq, in 1960, is a contemporary artist renowned for his evocative multimedia works that delve into themes of exile, memory, and the human condition. His practice encompasses painting, drawing, animation, and video, often characterized by shadowy, faceless figures set against dark backgrounds, reflecting existential inquiries and the fragility of life.

Alfraji's artistic journey began with studies in painting and printmaking at the Institute of Fine Arts in Baghdad. He later pursued further education in the Netherlands, where he currently resides. His work has been showcased in numerous solo and group exhibitions worldwide, including prestigious venues such as the Venice Biennale in 2017. His pieces are part of esteemed collections, notably the British Museum in London and the Museum of Fine Arts in Houston.

Throughout his career, Alfraji has received several accolades, including being named Artist of the Year at the Esquire Middle East Awards in 2012 and a Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Center awardee in 2014. His contributions have significantly impacted contemporary Middle Eastern art, offering profound insights into personal and collective narratives of displacement and identity.
