Kathem Nweer

Kadhim Nwir, born in 1967 in Al-Diwaniyah, Iraq, is a distinguished Iraqi painter, art critic, and academic. He earned his Ph.D. in Visual Art Education from the University of Babylon in 2001, focusing on the static philosophy of modern painting. Nwir's artistic journey began in the late 1980s, and he has since developed a style that blends abstract expressionism with elements of folk art, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of Iraq. His works often explore themes of identity and memory, utilizing vibrant colors and dynamic compositions.

Throughout his career, Nwir has participated in numerous solo and group exhibitions both domestically and internationally. Notable solo exhibitions include "Contemplating" at the Mohammed V Theatre in Rabat, Morocco, in 2012, and "Remains of War" at City Café Gallery in Beirut, Lebanon, in 2004. His group exhibitions span various countries, including France, Jordan, and Kuwait, showcasing the global appeal of his art. In recognition of his contributions, Nwir has received several prestigious awards, such as the first prize in the "Greetings to Jawad Salim" exhibition at Ather Gallery in Baghdad in 1997, and the first award in visual art criticism at the Mubdiuun Competition organized by Assada Magazine in the UAE. Additionally, he was honored with the State Award in painting for youth by the Iraqi Ministry of Culture in 2002.

Beyond his artistic endeavors, Nwir has made significant contributions to art education and criticism. He serves as a professor at the University of Babylon's College of Fine Arts and has authored several critical works, including "The Self in Modern Painting" and "Between Art and Education." His dedication to fostering the arts in Iraq has solidified his reputation as a leading figure in the country's contemporary art scene.
