Fouad Tag

Fouad Tag (1933–2023) was an Egyptian painter renowned for his contributions to modern Egyptian art. Born on July 1, 1933, in Al-Gharbia, Egypt, he earned a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Painting from Cairo University in 1958 and later obtained a Ph.D. in Art Philosophy from the Italian Academy of Arts in 1970. Tag's artistic style encompassed realism, expressionism, and symbolism, reflecting a deep engagement with contemporary urban life.

Throughout his career, Tag held several academic positions, including serving as a professor and head of the Painting Department at the Faculty of Fine Arts, Alexandria University. He also worked as a consultant for the restoration of presidential palaces in Alexandria and was a photographer for prominent state figures. His work was showcased in numerous solo and group exhibitions both in Egypt and internationally, including the Alexandria Biennale (1972, 1976, 1980), the Venice Biennale (1964), the São Paulo Biennale in Brazil, and the Paris Biennale for Youth.

In the art market, Tag's paintings have been featured in various auctions, with realized prices ranging from $199 to $7,083, depending on the size and medium of the artwork. His highest auction record to date is $7,083 for the painting "Young Lovers," sold at Bonhams New Bond Street in 2021. Tag passed away on March 28, 2023, at the age of 90, leaving behind a legacy that continues to influence Egyptian art.
