Brazil,b. 1943

Ana Maria Pacheco is a Brazilian-born artist, born in 1943 in Goiânia, Brazil, renowned for her multidisciplinary practice encompassing sculpture, painting, and printmaking. Pacheco’s work is characterized by its powerful figurative style, often exploring themes of exile, transformation, and the complexities of the human condition. Her sculptural installations, frequently carved from wood and arranged in immersive tableaux, evoke both mythic narratives and contemporary social concerns, drawing on her Brazilian heritage as well as European art historical traditions.

Pacheco moved to the United Kingdom in 1973, where she has established a significant presence in the contemporary art scene. She was the first non-European artist to be appointed as Head of Fine Art at the Slade School of Fine Art, University College London, serving from 1985 to 1989. Her work has been exhibited in major institutions, including solo exhibitions at the National Gallery, London, and the Museum of Modern Art, Oxford. Pacheco’s pieces are held in prominent collections such as the British Museum and the Arts Council Collection. At auction, her works have appeared at leading houses including Sotheby’s and Christie’s, reflecting her international recognition and the sustained interest of collectors in her distinctive, narrative-driven oeuvre.
