Amal Kenawy

Amal Kenawy (1974–2012) was a pioneering Egyptian artist known for her innovative work across video, performance, installation, and mixed media. Born in Cairo, Kenawy emerged as a significant figure in contemporary Middle Eastern art, often exploring themes of femininity, social constraints, and the human condition. Her practice was marked by a poetic yet confrontational approach, blending personal narratives with broader social commentary. Kenawy’s work frequently incorporated her own body, using performance and video to challenge traditional roles and provoke dialogue around issues of identity and autonomy.

Kenawy’s art has been exhibited in major international institutions, including the Centre Pompidou in Paris, the Sharjah Art Foundation, and the Venice Biennale, where she participated in the Egyptian Pavilion.
