Art Basel Qatar: The Region's Newest Landmark Fair Opens in Doha
Art Basel arrives in the Middle East for the first time, with an inaugural Doha edition curated by Wael Shawky under the theme "Becoming."
The Art Basel name — synonymous with the world's most important art fairs — has arrived in the Middle East for the first time. Art Basel Qatar staged its inaugural edition in Doha in early 2026, instantly reshaping the region's cultural calendar.
Rather than the traditional grid of booths, the fair debuts a new format built around artist presentations, prioritising curatorial vision over commercial display. Its first edition, themed Becoming, was led by Artistic Director Wael Shawky alongside Vincenzo de Bellis, bringing together 84 presentations by 87 galleries from 31 countries and territories.
Hosted across M7 and the Doha Design District, Art Basel Qatar signals Qatar's ambition to sit at the centre of the global art conversation — and gives collectors of modern and contemporary art from the Middle East a powerful new platform close to home.
Essentials: 5–7 February 2026 (previews 3–4 February) · M7 & Doha Design District, Doha, Qatar.
